Most airport security focuses on what goes in — not what comes out. The period between collecting your luggage at the belt and getting to your car is where items most commonly go missing.
Trolley Theft at Arrivals
A genuinely common scam at Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad airports: a stranger offers to help push your trolley to the exit. They walk slightly ahead and gradually veer off — either into a different exit with your luggage, or they take individual bags from the trolley while you're distracted finding your family or ride.
Rule: Never let a stranger touch your trolley. Tip airport porters with official vests if you need help — don't accept unsolicited help.
Confusion with Similar-Looking Bags at the Belt
Pakistani airports have high bag-confusion rates. Most traveling Pakistanis use similar black or dark-colored bags, often from the same brands. Bags get taken by mistake — sometimes by accident, sometimes intentionally. Use distinguishing marks:
- Bright luggage straps around the bag
- Colorful ribbon or tag attached to the handle
- A Nishaaan QR tag on the side — unique and scannable for identification
- Take a photo of your bag before checking it in
Taxi and Ride-Hailing Scams
- Unofficial taxis at airport exits quote high prices and take scenic routes — use Careem or InDriver from inside the terminal
- Fake ride-hailing drivers — verify the car model and number plate matches your app before loading luggage
- Some unofficial taxis 'accidentally' drive off with one bag in the trunk before the passenger realizes
Parking Lot Safety
If you've parked at the airport and are leaving your car there while you travel:
- Never leave bags visible in the car — put everything in the trunk
- Photograph your car and its location before entering the terminal
- Karachi JIAP parking: use the covered indoor parking, not the open-air lot
- Remove car documents from the glove compartment before leaving the car unattended for multiple days
