Islamabad Tourist Guide — Margalla Hills, Faisal Masjid & Safety Tips
Islamabad is Pakistan's most organized city. This tourist guide covers Margalla Hills trails, Faisal Masjid, shopping, and how to protect your belongings in the capital.
Islamabad — Pakistan's Most Organized City
Islamabad, Pakistan's capital since 1966, is the country's most planned and orderly city — wide boulevards, Margalla Hills as a backdrop, embassies, and high-end residential sectors. For tourists, Islamabad offers a different experience from Lahore or Karachi: cleaner, calmer, more accessible nature. Margalla Hills National Park is literally part of the city. Islamabad is also the gateway to Murree, Nathia Gali, and the KKH to Gilgit-Baltistan.
Margalla Hills Trails — Hiker Safety
Trail 3 (Most Popular)
Trail 3 starts from F-6 Sector — 2.6 km round trip, moderate difficulty. Very popular with Islamabad's fitness community — thousands use it daily. At the trailhead, people leave bags in their cars, at the benches, or at the nearby facilities. Items left at trailheads are vulnerable. Bring only what you need on the trail in a small daypack. QR tag the daypack.
Trail 5 (More Challenging)
Trail 5 offers a more demanding 6 km round trip with panoramic views of Islamabad. Less crowded but items left at the trailhead parking area are particularly vulnerable as it's more isolated. Park in the official IUCN parking area and lock your vehicle.
Faisal Masjid — Belongings at Pakistan's Largest Mosque
Faisal Masjid is the world's fourth largest mosque and Islamabad's most iconic landmark. Visit etiquette: shoes must be removed and stored. The mosque provides shoe storage at the entrance — use it rather than leaving shoes outside. Keep your bag with you inside the mosque. At the outdoor plaza, bags left on benches while doing wudu or exploring the grounds have been taken. Faisal Masjid is extremely well-maintained and generally safe, but the enormous visitor volume means vigilance is always warranted.
Shopping in Islamabad
Centaurus Mall
Centaurus is Islamabad's premier shopping mall — five floors, international brands, food court, cinema. Generally very safe with strong mall security. The most common issue: bags left on chairs in the food court or in shop changing rooms. QR tags mean mall security can return lost bags immediately by calling you.
F-6 Markaz (Super Market)
F-6's commercial area is busy on evenings and weekends. Phone use while walking in the parking area — drive-by snatching, while less common than Karachi, has been reported. Use your phone inside shops or at coffee shops, not while walking.
