University Hostel Move-In Checklist — What to Bring & How to Protect Your Stuff
Every September, hundreds of thousands of students move into university hostels. Complete checklist of essentials, electronics, security tips, and how to protect belongings.
Room Essentials
- Bedding set — sheet, pillow, pillowcase, light blanket (hostel mattresses are provided, linen often isn't)
- 2 sets of towels
- Bucket and mug (essential in Pakistani hostels — shower facilities vary)
- Toiletries: soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, razor/shaving kit
- Hangers — 10 minimum
- Strong combination padlock for your cupboard — this is non-negotiable
- Extension cord with 3–4 outlets and surge protection
- Small fan or table fan — hostels are notoriously hot, especially in Punjab
- Laundry detergent (Surf Excel) and drying rope
- Flip flops / bathroom slippers — never use hostel bathrooms without footwear
Electronics
- Laptop — the most critical academic item. Put a Nishaaan QR tag on the bag immediately
- Laptop lock cable — secure to desk or bed frame when sleeping
- Charger for all devices

- Power bank — load-shedding is still a reality in many university areas
- Small UPS or rechargeable LED light for load-shedding
Study Supplies
- Stationery: pens, highlighters, ruler, stapler, scissors
- Scientific calculator (if applicable to your program)
- Textbooks — only buy after seeing the curriculum, many universities share digitally

- Rain gear — umbrella or light raincoat for monsoon months
Security — The Most Important Section
Hostel theft is endemic at Pakistani universities. The most commonly stolen items are laptops, phones, earphones, and cash. Here's how to protect yourself:
- Cupboard lock — use it every time you leave your room, even for 5 minutes
- Laptop lock cable — PKR 800–1,500 at most electronics shops
- Nishaaan QR tag on laptop bag — if your bag is taken and later found, anyone can scan and call you
- Nishaaan QR tag on phone case — incredibly common to leave phone behind at lectures
- Never leave cash in your room — use a bank account and ATM
- Photo all your electronics and note serial numbers — keep these photos in your email, not just your phone
- Get to know your floor neighbours — community awareness deters theft
