Traveling with a Disability in Pakistan — Accessibility Guide & Belongings Safety
Wheelchair accessibility at Pakistani airports, Pakistan Railways accommodations, road travel, mobility aids on airlines, and QR tags for mobility equipment.
Airport Accessibility in Pakistan
New Islamabad International Airport (NIIA)
The best-accessible airport in Pakistan. Wheelchair ramps, accessible washrooms, dedicated assistance lanes at security. Request wheelchair assistance when booking — contact the airline at least 48 hours before travel. NIIA has dedicated accessible parking near the terminal entrance.
Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore (AIIAP)
Wheelchair assistance available — request through the airline. Accessibility is functional but not as modern as NIIA. The older terminal section has some uneven surfaces.
Jinnah International Airport Karachi (JIAP)
Wheelchair assistance available. Older terminal — some sections have limited ramp access. Escalators to upper levels but lifts are available.
Pakistan Railways Disability Accommodations
- Pakistan Railways has a disability quota — reserved seats at the front of lower-class carriages
- Wheelchair passengers should notify the station master upon arrival
- Platform assistance for boarding is available on request — call the station in advance
- Accessible washrooms are not consistently available on trains — plan accordingly
- For booking: call 051-9272420 (Rawalpindi HQ) and ask for disability reservation
Mobility Aids on Airlines — Know Your Rights
Wheelchairs and mobility aids are commonly damaged or lost during airline travel. This is a significant problem globally and Pakistan is no exception.
- Motorized wheelchairs must be declared at booking — airlines need to manage battery handling
- Manual wheelchairs: airlines must transport free of charge under international convention
- If your wheelchair is damaged by the airline: file a report before leaving the airport (same process as lost luggage PIR)
- PIA wheelchair damage claim: 111-786-786
- Custom-fitted wheelchairs are irreplaceable in the short term — document with photos before checking it
QR Tags on Mobility Aids — Critical
A manual or motorized wheelchair, crutches, or prosthetic device that goes astray at an airport or railway station is not just an inconvenience — it can leave a person immobilized. A Nishaaan QR tag on every mobility aid provides immediate identification for airport and railway staff.
