Pakistan Railways Travel Guide — Routes, Tips & Luggage Safety

Complete Pakistan Railways guide — major routes like Green Line and Tezgam, ticket booking, luggage rules, common problems, and how QR tags protect your belongings during train travel.

Pakistan Railways — The Network

Pakistan Railways operates one of South Asia's largest rail networks — 7,791 km of track connecting all four provinces. While road travel dominates for short distances, trains remain the preferred choice for long overnight journeys due to comfort and (relative) cost-effectiveness compared to flights.

Major Routes and Train Names

  • Karachi ↔ Lahore: Green Line Express (fastest), Shalimar Express, Allama Iqbal Express
  • Karachi ↔ Peshawar: Khyber Mail (the legendary overnight train)
  • Lahore ↔ Islamabad: Rawal Express, Pakistan Express
  • Lahore ↔ Faisalabad: Multiple daily services
  • Karachi ↔ Quetta: Jaffar Express (longest route in Pakistan — 24+ hours)
  • Islamabad ↔ Peshawar: Mehrban Express

Booking Pakistan Railways Tickets

Online booking is available through the Pakistan Railways website (pakrail.gov.pk) and mobile app. You can also book at any major station. For peak seasons (Eid, summer), book 2-3 weeks in advance. AC Business and AC Sleeper classes typically sell out first.

Classes available: AC Business (highest), AC Sleeper, AC Standard, Economy, and Freight (for vehicles). For overnight journeys, AC Sleeper offers the best combination of privacy and comfort.

Pakistan Railways Luggage Rules

  • AC Business: 70kg free luggage allowance
  • AC Sleeper: 50kg
  • Economy: 35kg
  • Excess luggage charged at PKR 2-5 per kg
  • No official check of luggage — it's stored in compartments or overhead racks in your own care
  • Valuable items (electronics, jewellery) must not be left in unlocked bags in your compartment

Common Luggage Problems on Pakistan Railways

  • Bags left behind when rushing during station stops — trains sometimes have 2-minute station halts
  • Items stolen from unlocked bags during overnight journeys
  • Bags placed in wrong compartment in crowded trains during Eid season
  • Children's bags and small items left at seats during long journeys

🚂 Train travel tip

For overnight journeys, chain your bag to the luggage rack with a small padlock. And attach a Nishaaan QR tag to every bag. If you accidentally leave a bag at a station or another passenger finds your lost item in the compartment, they can scan the QR and contact you immediately.

Safety Tips for Pakistan Railways Travel

  • Travel in groups when possible — safer and more watchful
  • In Economy class overnight: keep valuables on your person while sleeping
  • Lock your compartment door if you have an AC Sleeper cabin
  • Keep your phone charged — railway stations in rural areas can be unexpected stops
  • Inform family of your exact train and compartment number
  • Keep important documents in a secure inner pocket, not your bag
