Hospital Discharge Checklist — Don't Leave Your Belongings Behind
When patients are discharged, they're often unwell or in a rush. Complete checklist of items commonly left behind in Pakistani hospitals, and QR tag system for recovery.
Why Discharge is High-Risk for Forgotten Items
Hospital discharge in Pakistan typically happens quickly — a doctor signs the paperwork, the billing department rushes the patient, the family is emotional and relieved, and everyone is focused on getting home safely. In this distraction, significant items get left behind.
Items Most Commonly Left Behind in Pakistani Hospitals
- Phone charger — plugged in behind the bed or beside table
- Glasses or reading glasses — in the bedside drawer
- Slippers and sandals — under the bed or in the bathroom
- Personal medicine bottles on the side table or in the bathroom cabinet
- Prescription documents at the nursing station or doctor's desk
- Personal clothing in the bathroom — left while changing into discharge clothes
- Children's items if a child was a patient — toys, snacks, small bags
- Prayer items — tasbeeh, small Quran
- Laptop or tablet used during the stay
- Food containers brought by family
The Hospital Discharge Checklist — Complete Before Signing Out
- 1Unplug all chargers and collect all electronics from every outlet in the room
- 2Open every drawer — bedside table, wardrobe if provided
- 3Check under the bed and behind furniture
- 4Check the bathroom completely: cabinet, hooks, behind the door, floor
- 5Collect all medication from side table and bathroom
- 6Collect all personal clothing
- 7Check the nursing station for any documents left there
- 8Ask the ward nurse to do a final room check — they know the room better
- 9Collect official discharge summary and prescriptions
QR Tags on Hospital Belongings
A Nishaaan QR tag on the patient's main bag means if anything is found by ward staff after discharge, they can scan and immediately contact the family. This is particularly valuable for elderly patients whose family members may not be easy to track down through hospital records alone.
If You Realize Something Was Left Behind
- Call the ward directly — hospitals have ward-specific numbers
- Visit within 24 hours — items held for longer periods have a much lower recovery rate
