Every year, tens of thousands of Pakistani students depart for universities in the UK (especially London and Manchester), USA (particularly New York and Chicago), Canada (Toronto, Vancouver), and Australia (Sydney, Melbourne). They typically check 2-3 bags packed with their entire life — clothes for all seasons, cooking equipment, documents, electronics. These bags transit through Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, or other major hubs — and that's where most luggage goes missing.

Most Dangerous Transit Points

• Dubai International Airport (DXB) — highest volume in the world, most Pakistani transit here
• Hamad International (Doha) — Qatar Airways hub, many Pakistani student routes

What to Pack in Your Carry-On

For study abroad specifically, your carry-on is your lifeline. If your checked bags go missing (which happens to roughly 1 in 150 passengers on long-haul routes), you need to be able to function for 3-5 days with your carry-on alone.

• All important documents — passport, visa, university acceptance letter, NADRA CNIC
• Laptop and essential electronics — never check these
• 3 days of medication if you take any
• One change of clothes and essential toiletries
• University welcome pack information and accommodation address
• Emergency cash in the destination country's currency

Tagging Your Bags for Maximum Protection

• Remove all old airline tags and stickers from previous trips — they confuse automated sorting systems
• Use a bright, unique luggage strap or tag for visual identification at carousels
• Put your destination address (university accommodation) inside the bag too

If Your Bags Go Missing on Arrival

1. 1Go to the airline's baggage services counter before leaving the arrivals hall
2. 2File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) — get the reference number
3. 3The airline should deliver found bags to your UK/USA/Canadian address within 24-72 hours
4. 4Keep receipts for any emergency purchases — airlines reimburse reasonable expenses for delayed bags
5. 5If your bags have a Nishaaan QR tag: the airport or hotel that receives them can contact you directly, even before the formal tracing process is complete
