Essential Vehicle Documents Every Pakistani Driver Must Have
What documents do you legally need to drive in Pakistan? This complete checklist covers registration, license, insurance, token tax, and more.
Required Documents to Drive Legally in Pakistan
1. Driving License
A valid driving license from your provincial traffic authority (Punjab, Sindh, KPK, or Balochistan). Learner's permits are not valid for solo driving. Always carry the original — photocopies are not accepted by traffic police.
2. Vehicle Registration Book (Log Book)
Every registered vehicle must have a registration book (also called the Log Book or RC Book). This proves legal ownership. Available from Excise & Taxation offices. Without this, you cannot sell the vehicle or clear a police checkpost without hassle.
3. Token Tax Receipt
Annual token tax (vehicle road tax) must be paid and the receipt carried. The amount varies by engine size and vehicle type. Unpaid token tax results in fines at checkposts.
4. Third-Party Insurance
Third-party insurance is legally mandatory for all vehicles in Pakistan. Comprehensive insurance is optional but strongly recommended. Keep the policy document and a recent premium receipt in the vehicle.
Additional Documents for Long-Distance or Commercial Travel
- Route permit (for commercial vehicles operating specific routes)
- Fitness certificate (for older vehicles on commercial routes)
- Goods transport vehicle permit
- Motorway access permit (for overloaded commercial vehicles, this is required at entry points)
What to Do If Documents Are Stolen With Your Vehicle
If your vehicle is stolen along with documents, you'll need to apply for duplicate copies from the Excise & Taxation office. Bring: original FIR, CNIC, and proof of ownership (purchase deed or previous receipts). This process takes 2-4 weeks.
Supplementary Digital Identification
A Nishaaan QR vehicle tag inside your car provides an additional layer of digital identification — scannable by police, traffic wardens, or anyone who needs to quickly verify or contact the owner. Order today.
