About Gaddafi Stadium
Gaddafi Stadium, officially known as the Gaddafi Stadium, is Pakistan's most iconic cricket venue. Located in the heart of Lahore on Ferozepur Road, near the Lahore Gymkhana and Liberty Market, the stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 27,000 and has hosted some of the most memorable moments in Pakistan cricket — from the 1996 World Cup quarter-final to the historic return of international cricket in 2017.
Today, Gaddafi Stadium is the primary venue for Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches in Lahore, international Test matches, ODIs, and T20Is. On match days, the area around the stadium transforms into a carnival, with tens of thousands of fans converging on a relatively small neighbourhood. The atmosphere is electric — but it also creates real risks for your personal belongings.
Entry Protocols
Getting a Ticket
Tickets for PSL and international matches are sold through the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official website and authorized outlets like Bookme.pk and TCS Express counters. Categories range from General Enclosure (PKR 500-1,000) to Premium/VIP (PKR 5,000-25,000). Digital tickets (e-tickets) are increasingly common, but physical tickets are still used for some categories.
Arriving at the Stadium
On match day, gates typically open 2-3 hours before the scheduled start. Arrive early to avoid the crush — the 30 minutes before play starts is when security queues are longest. The stadium has multiple entry gates corresponding to different seating sections:
- Gate 1 (Ferozepur Road side): General Enclosure and lower-tier seating. This is the busiest gate.
- Gate 2 (Jail Road side): Mid-tier seating (Imran Khan Enclosure, Fazal Mahmood Enclosure).
- Gate 3 (near Bagh-e-Jinnah): Premium and VIP enclosures. Less crowded but longer walk from main roads.
- Gate 4 (rear, Liberty side): Additional general entry, opened during high-demand matches.
Security Screening
Security at Gaddafi Stadium is managed by the Pakistan Army and local police on match days, with PCB security staff inside the stadium. Expect the following:
- 1Ticket verification at the outer perimeter (100-200 metres from the stadium). Only valid ticket holders allowed beyond this point.
- 2Bag inspection and body pat-down at the gate. Bags above a certain size may not be allowed — check the PCB advisory before the match.
- 3Walk-through metal detectors at some gates (especially for premium enclosures).
- 4CNIC (national ID) or passport check. Your ID must match the name on the ticket for premium categories.
- 5Random secondary screening inside the stadium by plain-clothes security.
Prohibited Items
The following items are NOT allowed inside Gaddafi Stadium on match days. Bringing these will cause delays at security and the items will be confiscated (often without return):
- Glass bottles and cans of any kind
- Large bags, backpacks, or coolers (typically anything larger than a small crossbody or clutch)
- Professional cameras with detachable lenses (phone cameras are allowed)
- Weapons of any kind, including pocket knives and multi-tools
- Fireworks, flares, or any pyrotechnics
- Outside food and beverages (enforcement varies — small sealed water bottles are sometimes allowed)
- Banners or flags larger than 1x1 metre with sticks or poles
- Power banks above a certain capacity (varies by match — check PCB guidelines)
- Drones or remote-controlled devices
- Whistles, vuvuzelas, or horns (sometimes allowed for PSL but not for international matches)
What to Bring Instead
Keep it minimal: phone, wallet (with only the cash you need), CNIC, ticket (physical or on phone), and a small crossbody bag. Leave everything else in your car or at home. The less you carry, the faster you get through security and the less you risk losing.
Seating Sections
Gaddafi Stadium's seating is divided into named enclosures, each with different views and facilities:
- Quaid-e-Azam Enclosure (Pavilion End): The main stand behind the bowler's arm. Best view of the pitch. VIP and corporate boxes.
- Imran Khan Enclosure: Mid-tier seating along the eastern side. Popular with families. Covered seating.
- Fazal Mahmood Enclosure: Western side, partially covered. Good views for the price.
- Abdul Hafeez Kardar Enclosure: Behind the other bowler's arm. The sun can be harsh here in afternoon matches.
- General Enclosure: Uncovered seating in the upper tiers. Cheapest tickets but the atmosphere is often the best — this is where the loudest fans sit.
For belongings safety, covered enclosures are better — your items are protected from sudden rain (common in Lahore's monsoon months) and the sun doesn't damage phones left on seats. In the General Enclosure, keep everything in your pockets or on your lap.
Food Stalls and Vendors
Inside Gaddafi Stadium, food and beverage stalls are located along the concourse (the circular walkway behind the seating areas). During PSL matches, the variety is decent:
- Fast food counters (burgers, fries, sandwiches): PKR 400-800
- Desi food stalls (biryani, rolls, samosas): PKR 200-500
- Beverages (bottled water, soft drinks, juices): PKR 100-300
- Tea stalls at multiple points along the concourse
- VIP and Premium enclosures have dedicated food counters with wider menus and table service
The biggest risk at food stalls is putting your phone down on the counter while paying or eating. Keep your phone in your front pocket or hold it. The queues at food stalls during innings breaks are chaotic — this is when most items are lost or pickpocketed.
Parking Areas
Official Parking
On match days, official parking is available at:
- Gaddafi Stadium Parking Lot (limited capacity): Enter from the Jail Road side. PKR 200-500 per car. Fills up 2-3 hours before the match.
- Bagh-e-Jinnah (Lawrence Garden) overflow parking: A short walk from Gate 3. Free on most match days but managed by volunteers.
- Liberty Market area: Some commercial parking lots offer match-day parking for PKR 300-500. Be cautious about unofficial lots.
- Ferozepur Road side street parking: Free but risky — cars get blocked in by other vehicles, and break-ins happen on dark side streets.
Parking Safety Tips
- 1Park in well-lit, official lots whenever possible. Pay the parking fee — it's worth the peace of mind.
- 2Don't leave ANYTHING visible in your car. Bags on seats, chargers on the dashboard, or even a pair of sunglasses can attract a smash-and-grab.
- 3Lock your car with the key fob and double-check. In the excitement of match day, many people forget to lock properly.
- 4Note your parking spot (take a photo of the lot number or nearby landmark). Finding your car after a night match in a crowd of 20,000 fans is harder than you think.
- 5If you ride a motorcycle, use a disc lock in addition to the steering lock. Bike theft near cricket stadiums is a known problem in Lahore.
Pickpocket Awareness
Pickpocketing is a real risk at any large event in Pakistan, and cricket matches at Gaddafi Stadium are no exception. The most dangerous moments are:
- Entry queues: When everyone is pushing to get through security, pockets are easy to reach. Keep your phone in your front pocket and your wallet against your body.
- Wicket celebrations: When the crowd jumps up and everyone is hugging strangers, bags on seats or phones in back pockets are easy targets.
- Innings break food queues: Crowded, chaotic, and everyone is distracted. Hold your phone or keep it in a zipped pocket.
- Exit rush: After the match ends, thousands of people funnel through narrow exits. Keep your hand on your phone and wallet.
- In the stands: If you place your phone on the seat next to you, someone walking past in the row behind can grab it easily.
Anti-Pickpocket Tips
Use a crossbody bag with a zip closure. Keep your phone in your front pocket — never in a back pocket or an open bag. Carry only the cash you need (PKR 2,000-3,000 is enough for food and parking). Leave your expensive watch or jewellery at home. If someone bumps into you or creates a distraction, immediately check your pockets.
Keeping Belongings Safe During the Match
- 1Carry a small crossbody bag (not a backpack). Keep it on your lap or between your feet while seated.
- 2Phone stays in your front pocket or hand at all times. Never put it on the seat next to you.
- 3If you need to leave your seat (bathroom, food), take everything with you. Nothing is safe left on a plastic stadium seat.
- 4For families with children: keep kids' belongings in the parents' bag. Don't give young children phones or tablets to hold during the match.
- 5Attach a Nishaaan QR tag to your phone case, car keys, and bag. If anything is dropped or lost in the stadium, a good-faith finder can scan and contact you.
- 6Don't flash large amounts of cash. Use mobile payments where possible (JazzCash, EasyPaisa, or card) at food stalls.
QR Tags for Match Day
A cricket stadium is one of the easiest places to lose things — you're standing, sitting, jumping, and moving through crowds all day. A Nishaaan QR tag on your phone case, keys, or bag means that if it's dropped or left behind, anyone who finds it can scan and reach you. Stadium cleaning crews after matches find dozens of phones, wallets, and bags — a QR tag makes recovery dramatically more likely.
