About Allama Iqbal International Airport (AIIAP)
Allama Iqbal International Airport (IATA: LHE) is Pakistan's second-busiest airport, handling over 8 million passengers annually. Located in Cantt area, approximately 15 kilometres from central Lahore (about 25-30 minutes in normal traffic), the airport serves as a major hub for domestic flights and Gulf-bound international traffic.
The airport has two main terminals: the International Terminal (also called the Main Terminal) and the Hajj Terminal, which is activated seasonally for pilgrimage flights. A domestic wing within the main terminal handles all internal flights. The airport underwent significant renovation and expansion work in recent years, with improved passenger facilities, expanded lounges, and modernized baggage handling systems.
Lost & Found Office — Location and Process
Office Location
The Lost & Found / Baggage Services office at AIIAP is located on the Arrivals Level of the Main Terminal, behind Carousel 1, to the right of the exit doors. If you're facing the exit after clearing customs, turn right and walk to the end of the arrivals hall — you'll see a counter marked "Baggage Services / Lost & Found" near the ASF (Airport Security Force) post.
Operating Hours
The office is staffed during all flight arrival windows, which effectively means 24/7 coverage during peak seasons. During off-peak periods (typically 1:00 AM - 5:00 AM when no flights are arriving), the office may be closed but a security officer can take your details for follow-up.
AIIAP Contact Information
Airport Switchboard: 042-35714200. CAA Helpline: 111-222-282. Lost & Found Direct: 042-35714270 (ask for Baggage Services). For PIA-specific luggage queries at AIIAP: 042-35714241 or the national PIA helpline 111-786-786.
Step-by-Step: Claiming Lost Luggage
- 1Wait at the carousel until it stops completely. AIIAP has 4 carousels for international flights and 2 for domestic. Confirm you're at the right one by checking the flight number on the display.
- 2If your bag hasn't appeared, check the oversized baggage counter near the wall opposite the carousels. Prams, sports equipment, and fragile items are sometimes placed there separately.
- 3Proceed to your airline's baggage desk inside the arrivals hall. Each major airline has a counter or shares one through their ground handling agent.
- 4File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). This is your formal claim document. You need: your baggage tag receipt (the sticker from check-in, usually on your boarding pass), your passport, and a description of the bag (colour, brand, size, distinguishing marks).
- 5Get a PIR reference number, the agent's direct phone number, and an estimated timeline for resolution.
- 6Follow up daily by phone. Most delayed bags on Gulf routes arrive on the next day's flight. For European or North American routes, it may take 2-5 days.
Items Left at the Airport
For personal items left at check-in counters, security screening, lounges, waiting areas, or the cafeteria, the process is different from lost luggage:
- Items found by airport staff are collected by ASF personnel and taken to the Lost & Found office on the arrivals level.
- Contact the airport switchboard (042-35714200) and describe your item and where you left it.
- If you're still at the airport, go to the Lost & Found office directly.
- For items left in the departure lounge (airside), you cannot re-enter. Ask a staff member at the information desk to radio the lounge staff.
- Bring your CNIC or passport and boarding pass when claiming any item. You may need to describe the contents as additional verification.

Recent Terminal Upgrades
AIIAP has undergone several upgrades that affect the passenger experience and lost item procedures:
- New automated baggage handling system installed in the international terminal, reducing luggage mishandling incidents
- Expanded arrivals hall with additional carousels (now 4 for international, up from 3)
- Upgraded CCTV coverage throughout the terminal — over 400 cameras now operational. This helps in tracing lost items.
- New passenger information displays at each carousel showing flight number and baggage status
- Renovated departures lounge with improved seating, charging stations, and a family area
- Enhanced security screening area with separate lanes for families, business travellers, and Hajj/Umrah passengers
Peak Travel Periods — When to Be Extra Careful
Lahore airport experiences extreme passenger surges during specific periods. These are the times when luggage loss, delays, and confusion peak:
Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha
The 3-4 days before each Eid see massive outbound traffic (families flying to their hometowns or Gulf-based workers coming home). The days immediately after Eid see return traffic. During these windows, the airport operates well above normal capacity. Queues are longer, baggage handling is slower, and the arrivals hall is chaotic. Keep your luggage tagged and be prepared to wait.
Hajj Season
The Hajj Terminal at AIIAP activates for 2-3 months. Tens of thousands of pilgrims pass through, many elderly and travelling with significant belongings (ihram, prayer mats, gifts, Zamzam water). The Hajj Terminal has its own baggage area but shares some infrastructure. If you're flying during Hajj season (even non-Hajj flights), expect delays.
December-January and Summer Holidays
Overseas Pakistanis return in large numbers during winter holidays and summer. Flights from the UK, Canada, USA, and UAE are packed. Excess and oversized luggage creates bottlenecks at the carousels. These periods also see the highest incidence of luggage being placed on the wrong carousel.
Luggage Security Tips for Lahore Airport
- 1Attach a Nishaaan QR tag to every piece of checked and carry-on luggage. If your bag ends up on the wrong carousel or is found later, the tag enables instant contact.
- 2Use a luggage strap (the colourful fabric straps that go around your suitcase). They make your bag identifiable at a distance and prevent accidental opening.
- 3Remove old airline tags from previous flights. Multiple tags confuse the baggage system and can cause your bag to be routed incorrectly.
- 4Take a photo of each bag (inside and outside) before check-in. Store these photos on your phone and cloud.
- 5Keep all valuables, medications, and one change of clothes in your carry-on. If your checked luggage is delayed, you'll survive.
- 6Arrive early for check-in (3 hours for international, 2 hours for domestic). Late check-in means your bag is the last loaded — and often the first to be offloaded if the hold is full.
- 7Use TSA-approved combination locks on all checked luggage. Key locks can be picked; combination locks deter casual tampering.
QR Tags + Air Travel
A Nishaaan QR tag on your luggage is your permanent identifier. Unlike paper airline tags that rip off during handling, a QR tag sticker or hard tag on your bag survives the entire journey. If your bag arrives at Lahore without its airline tag (it happens), airport staff can still identify it by scanning your QR tag.
