The Routes from Lahore to Murree

Lahore is approximately 280-310 km from Murree depending on the route taken. There are two main options:

Route 1: M-2 Motorway + Islamabad Bypass + Murree Expressway (Recommended)

• Lahore → M-2 Motorway → Rawat Interchange → Islamabad Ring Road → Faizabad → Expressway → Murree
• Total distance: approximately 310 km
• Total time: 4–5 hours without stops
• Road quality: Excellent on motorway, good on expressway, fair on Murree approach roads
• Advantage: faster, less traffic, better maintained

Route 2: GT Road (Grand Trunk Road) via Gujranwala and Rawalpindi

• Lahore → GT Road → Gujranwala → Gujrat → Jhelum → Rawalpindi → Murree Road
• Total distance: approximately 280 km
• Total time: 5–7 hours (heavy traffic through multiple cities)
• Road quality: Variable — good in open sections, poor through cities
• Advantage: more fuel and food options along the way

The Murree Expressway (The Critical Section)

The Murree Expressway connects Rawalpindi (Faizabad Interchange) to Murree — a 33km stretch that climbs from 600m to 2,200m elevation. This is the most challenging section:

• One-lane traffic management is often imposed in each direction during peak times
• In winter (November–March), snow and ice make this section extremely dangerous
• A road safety disaster in December 2021 (multiple deaths in snowstorm) led to new regulations
• Always check NHMP advisories before driving in winter: nhmp.gov.pk
• Snow chains are mandatory on the expressway when snowfall is recorded
• Authorities may close the road and turn back vehicles at Kohala and Tret checkpoints

Murree Mall Road — Parking and Safety

Murree's Mall Road is the iconic social hub — lined with shops, restaurants, and viewpoints. But it's also a congestion nightmare during peak season:

• Parking: use the designated parking lots below Mall Road (near Pindi Point) — PKR 100–300 per hour. Walking up is safer than attempting to park on the road.
• Weekends and holidays: the road closes to private vehicles during peak hours. Park in the lower lots and walk or take a rickshaw.
• Crowds: weekends and school holidays bring enormous crowds. Keep bags secured and wallets in inside pockets.
• Shopping: vendors line Mall Road selling everything from fruits to winter clothing. Negotiate prices.

Essential Tips Before Going to Murree

• Check weather: snow in Murree is beautiful but makes roads treacherous. Check Pakistan Met Department (pmd.gov.pk).
• Book accommodation in advance for weekends — Murree hotels fill up completely on Friday/Saturday.
• Carry warm clothing regardless of season — temperatures drop significantly after sunset even in summer.
• Keep a full fuel tank when leaving for Murree — some stations run out during peak weekends.
• Mobile signal is generally good in Murree town but can be weak on some approach roads.
