LUMS Student Belongings Safety Guide — Protect Your Stuff on Campus
Complete guide to keeping your belongings safe at LUMS Lahore. Hostel security, library tips, building-specific advice, Sports Complex lockers, lost & found, and QR tag solutions for students.
Why Belongings Safety Matters at LUMS
The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), located on the DHA Lahore Cantt campus along Opposite Sector U, is one of Pakistan's most prestigious universities. With over 4,000 students, hundreds of faculty members, and a sprawling 100-acre campus, LUMS is a vibrant and busy environment. But that same energy means items get lost, misplaced, or occasionally stolen every single semester.
From expensive laptops left unattended at the Pepsi Dining Centre (PDC) to bikes disappearing from racks near the academic blocks, LUMS students face real risks when it comes to personal property. This guide covers every corner of campus so you can study, play, and socialize without worrying about your stuff.
Hostel Security at LUMS
Understanding the Hostel Layout
LUMS has multiple hostel blocks for both male and female students. The newer hostels (Blocks 7-12) are located behind the Sports Complex, while older hostels (Blocks 1-6) are closer to the academic buildings. Each block houses roughly 100-150 students across double and triple occupancy rooms.
- Every hostel block has a guard stationed at the entrance 24/7 who checks student IDs
- Room doors have standard key locks — LUMS does not use electronic card access for individual rooms
- Common areas (TV rooms, kitchens) on each floor are shared spaces where items frequently go missing
- Laundry rooms are located on the ground floor of each block and are a common spot for lost clothing
Hostel Safety Tips
Most theft in LUMS hostels is opportunistic — someone leaves a room unlocked for a quick chai break and comes back to find a charger, power bank, or even a laptop missing. Here is what you should do:
- 1Always lock your room, even if you're just going to the washroom down the hall. It takes 10 seconds and saves you from hours of stress.
- 2Don't leave valuables on your bed or desk in plain sight through the window. Close curtains if your room faces a corridor.
- 3Use a small cable lock for your laptop — loop it through the desk handle or bed frame when you sleep.
- 4Keep expensive items (DSLR cameras, tablets, gaming consoles) in your wardrobe and use a padlock on the wardrobe handle.
- 5Label everything. Chargers, extension cords, and earphones all look identical. A Nishaaan QR tag on your charger or bag means anyone who finds it can contact you instantly.
LUMS Hostel Lost & Found
If something goes missing from your hostel room, report it to your Residential Life Office (RLO) on the ground floor of Block 1. You can also email reslife@lums.edu.pk. For serious theft, file a complaint with the Proctor's Office in the Administration Block, Room 14, Ground Floor.
Library and Study Areas
Gad & Birgit Rausing Library
The LUMS library is the heart of campus life, especially during midterms and finals. The Gad & Birgit Rausing Library has three floors with dedicated quiet zones, group study rooms, a computer lab, and the popular basement café. During exam season, every seat is occupied from morning till midnight.
The biggest risk here is leaving your laptop or bag to "reserve a seat" while you go for food or prayers. This is extremely common at LUMS — and extremely risky. Students have reported laptops, AirPods, graphing calculators, and textbooks going missing from unattended spots.
- Never leave your laptop unattended, even for 5 minutes. Ask a friend to watch your spot or take it with you.
- The group study rooms on the 2nd floor have glass walls — your belongings are visible to everyone. Don't leave phones or wallets on the table when you step out.
- The basement café area is the highest-risk zone. It's the busiest section, and bags placed under tables can be easily taken.
- Library lockers are available near the entrance on the ground floor. Ask the library staff for a key at the front desk — they require your student ID as deposit.
- Attach a Nishaaan QR tag to your laptop bag. If someone picks it up thinking it's theirs, a quick scan tells them it's not.
Academic Buildings — PDC, SDSB, SSE, SOL, and SAHSOL
Pepsi Dining Centre (PDC)
The PDC is where everyone eats, hangs out between classes, and often studies in groups. It has indoor seating across two floors and outdoor areas. The ground floor food court is always crowded during lunch (12:30 PM - 2:00 PM). Bags placed on chairs or under tables are easy targets during rush hours.
Tip: Keep your bag on your lap or between your feet while eating. Never hang it on the back of a chair in a crowded area. If you need to leave your spot, take your bag — food can wait, your laptop cannot.
Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB)
SDSB is the business school building near the main entrance. It has lecture halls, seminar rooms, and a student lounge on the ground floor. MBA and BBA students spend entire days here.
- The student lounge sofas are comfortable but don't leave your things on them while you go to class
- Seminar rooms are booked via the online portal — when you leave after a session, double-check you haven't left chargers or notebooks behind
- The SDSB corridor has open cubby-style storage that is NOT secure — anyone can reach in
Syed Babar Ali School of Science & Engineering (SSE)
SSE houses labs for physics, chemistry, biology, electrical engineering, and computer science. Lab equipment is university property and has strict protocols, but personal items like USB drives, calculators, and toolkits get lost regularly.
The SSE computer labs on the 2nd floor are open late. Students often leave USB drives plugged in or forget their headphones. The cleaning staff collects these items and drops them at the SSE front office, but not everything makes it there.
School of Law (SOL) and SAHSOL
The law building (Mukhtar Ahmed Sheikh Hall) has a moot court, library, and seminar rooms. Law students carry expensive casebooks and annotated legal texts. Label your books clearly — a QR tag sticker inside the front cover helps identify your property if it's mixed up with someone else's.
Sports Complex and Outdoor Areas
Lockers at the Sports Complex
The LUMS Sports Complex, located near the back of campus past the hostels, has facilities for cricket, football, basketball, swimming, and gym. The changing rooms have lockers, but they require you to bring your own padlock.
- 1Buy a combination padlock (avoid key locks — keys get lost). Available at the LUMS Khokha market for PKR 300-500.
- 2Don't leave phones or wallets in your shoes outside the gym area. Keep them in the locker or give them to a friend.
- 3The swimming pool changing area is the most common spot for lost items at the Sports Complex. Keep everything locked up.
- 4After inter-hostel tournaments, check the Sports Complex notice board for found items.
Bikes and Cycles on Campus
Many LUMS students use bicycles to get around the large campus. Bike theft is an occasional problem, especially the cheaper bikes that don't have locks. Always lock your bike to the designated racks near the PDC and library. Use a U-lock rather than a cable lock — cable locks can be cut in seconds.
Attach a Nishaaan QR tag to your bike frame. If it's found abandoned somewhere on or off campus, anyone who scans the tag can alert you without knowing your personal details.
LUMS Lost & Found — The Official Process
LUMS has a centralized lost and found system managed by the Administration Office, located on the Ground Floor of the main Admin Block near the campus entrance gate. Here's how it works:
- 1If you find a lost item, drop it off at the Admin Office reception desk. Staff log it with a description, date, and location found.
- 2If you've lost something, visit the Admin Office in person or call the campus security helpline at 042-35608000 (Ext. 8888).
- 3Lost items are held for 30 days. After that, unclaimed items may be donated or disposed of.
- 4For high-value items (laptops, phones, wallets), campus security may also be involved. File a written complaint.
- 5Check the LUMS student Facebook group and WhatsApp groups — students frequently post about found items there.
Campus Security Contact
LUMS Security Office: 042-35608000 (Ext. 2222). Available 24/7. Located at the Main Gate guardroom. For emergencies, call this number first — they coordinate with Lahore Police if needed.
QR Tags: The Smartest Move for LUMS Students
With the volume of identical-looking laptops (everyone has a ThinkPad or MacBook), bags (everyone owns a black backpack), and chargers at LUMS, labeling your items is not optional — it's essential. Traditional name labels fall off and are hard to read. Nishaaan QR tags solve this elegantly.
- Stick a QR tag on your laptop lid, bag strap, water bottle, and bike frame
- When scanned, it shows a contact page (not your personal number) so the finder can reach you safely
- You get instant notifications when someone scans your tag
- Perfect for chargers, power banks, and USB drives — items that are otherwise impossible to identify
- Tags cost as little as PKR 299 and last for years — cheaper than replacing a single textbook
Semester-Specific Tips
Orientation Week
New students arrive with everything they own. Don't leave suitcases or boxes unattended in the hostel corridors while you're exploring. Move-in day is chaotic — items get mixed up between rooms constantly. Label every bag before you arrive.
Midterms and Finals Season
The library is packed, tempers are short, and people are sleep-deprived. This is when the most items get lost. Keep your belongings in one bag, keep that bag closed, and keep it within arm's reach. Don't spread your things across two tables "to save space."
LUMS Psifi and Events
During Psifi (Pakistan's Science Fiction festival held at LUMS) and other cultural events, the campus is open to outsiders. This dramatically increases the risk of theft. During events, keep your phone in your front pocket, don't carry unnecessary valuables, and stay aware of your surroundings.
