Rest Areas on M-1
M-1 has two main service areas — smaller than M-2's Bhera but adequate for refueling and rest:
Hazro Service Area
- Petrol station (PSO), food stall, prayer area, basic washrooms
- Good stop for Islamabad-bound travelers from Peshawar
Swabi/Rashakai Area
- Emerging facilities as the Rashakai SEZ develops
- Petrol station, basic food
Motorway Police — M-1
- Emergency line: 130 (same as all motorways — toll-free)

- Peshawar sector: 091-9217130
- For Swabi-area incidents: 0938-271130
M-1 Safety Considerations
M-1 has some specific safety considerations compared to M-2:
- Higher truck traffic: M-1 carries heavy commercial traffic from the Rashakai SEZ and Afghanistan-Pakistan trade route. Large trucks create significant wind buffeting for smaller vehicles.
- Weather: M-1 passes through areas that get heavy fog in winter (November–January) and occasional thunderstorms in monsoon season.
- Wildlife: the stretch near Attock sometimes has animals crossing — drive carefully at dawn and dusk.
- Fog: M-1 can experience significant fog from December to February. Reduce speed, increase following distance, use fog lights — not high beams.
Luggage Safety on M-1
- Same rest area precautions as M-2 apply — lock your car at every stop
- Bus passengers on M-1 routes: luggage stored in the coach boot. Keep valuables in your hand luggage.
- If traveling to Peshawar for business: secure laptop bags and keep them with you in the passenger cabin
KPK Road Trips — Tag Your Luggage
Travelers heading to Peshawar, Swabi, or further north into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa should tag their luggage with a Nishaaan QR tag. If luggage is left on a bus or at a rest area, any KPK local who finds it can scan the QR and contact the owner. Order your travel tags.
