Anarkali Bazaar Lahore — Heritage Shopping & Safety Tips
One of South Asia's oldest bazaars. Complete guide to Old vs New Anarkali, what to buy, specific safety risks, and how to protect your belongings in Lahore's historic market.
Old Anarkali vs New Anarkali
Many people confuse these two adjacent markets. Old Anarkali (the original bazaar near Shimla Hill) specializes in traditional fabrics, bridal shopping, dry fruit, and antiques. New Anarkali (closer to Ferozepur Road) is more commercial with branded clothing, shoes, and everyday items. For traditional Pakistani shopping, Old Anarkali is the destination.
What Anarkali is Famous For
- Bridal fabrics — some of Pakistan's best fabric shops are in Old Anarkali
- Embroidered and printed cotton — lawn, chiffon, georgette at wholesale-adjacent prices
- Dry fruit — imported cashews, almonds, figs at competitive prices
- Traditional Pakistani food — the halwa puri spots here are legendary
- Gold and silver jewelry (several reputable jewelers)
- Books and stationery (the older part near Shimla Hill)
Specific Safety Risks
Narrow Lanes and Crowd Density
Old Anarkali's original lanes are some of the most congested market streets in South Asia. The density makes pickpocketing extremely easy. In crowded areas, keep one hand on your bag and your wallet in an inside pocket.
Shoe Theft at Mosques
Several mosques are embedded within the bazaar. Shoe theft at mosque entrances is common — shoes get switched with older pairs. If visiting a mosque inside the bazaar, use the paid shoe-keeping service (available at most large mosques) rather than leaving shoes unattended.
Multiple Shopping Bags
Bridal shoppers often carry 5–10 bags. Putting bags down to check new items creates mix-up and theft opportunities. Bring a trusted family member specifically designated as a bag-holder.
Auto-Rickshaw and Chingchi Tips
Getting to Anarkali by auto-rickshaw? Agree on the fare before entering. The standard fair from Lahore Railway Station to Anarkali should be under PKR 200. Chingchis (electric rickshaws) are cheaper but have open sides — keep bags in your lap, not on the seat next to you.
