Buying from OLX or Facebook Marketplace in Pakistan? How to Stay Safe
Millions of Pakistanis buy and sell on OLX and Facebook Marketplace. Common scams, how to verify sellers, safe meeting spots, stolen goods checks, and PTA IMEI verification.
Common OLX & Facebook Marketplace Scams in Pakistan
Advance Payment Fraud
Seller asks for advance payment to "hold" the item. Once you pay, they block you. Never pay in advance for anything on OLX or Facebook Marketplace unless you have a verifiable track record with the seller.
Fake or Stolen Goods
Stolen phones, laptops, and motorcycles are regularly sold on OLX. The seller has the physical item, so it seems legitimate — but the item may be reported stolen with police, creating legal trouble for you as the buyer.
Fake Buyers Robbing Sellers
A buyer agrees to buy an expensive item (phone, laptop, motorcycle). They ask to meet in a quiet location for "inspection." Multiple people show up and rob the seller. This is unfortunately common in Pakistan's major cities.
Description Fraud
Items described as "brand new" or "original" that are refurbished, repaired, or counterfeit. Phones particularly suffer from this — repaired screens sold as original, refurbished units sold as new.
How to Verify Before Buying
- Check seller profile — account age, number of completed sales, reviews
- Video call the seller — ask them to show the item live, not in recorded video
- For phones: ask the seller to dial *#06# to show IMEI number. Cross-check on PTA DIRBS (dirbs.pta.gov.pk)
- For motorcycles: ask for registration book and verify on MTMIS before meeting
- For electronics: meet at a repair shop and have it inspected on the spot
- Never buy original box items — boxes are easily sourced separately and used to disguise fake products
Safe Meeting Spots for Transactions
- Police station parking lots — the absolute safest option. Many police stations in Pakistan now officially support this
- Busy commercial areas — Liberty Market, Tariq Road, F-7 Markaz (public, lots of witnesses)
- Bank branch lobbies — camera-covered, secure
- Never meet in residential areas, parks, or isolated spots
- Always bring a trusted friend — never go alone for high-value transactions
QR Tags as Proof of Ownership
When selling your item, a Nishaaan QR tag registered in your name provides proof of ownership. Show the buyer your QR registration — it demonstrates you're the legitimate owner with a verifiable identity linked to the item. This builds trust and can help resolve disputes.
If You're Scammed — Next Steps

- File FIR at nearest police station for robbery or significant fraud
- Report the profile on OLX/Facebook — this prevents them from scamming others
