Naran Kaghan Travel Guide — Lake Saif ul Malook, Tips & Safety

Naran Kaghan is the most visited valley in KPK. Jeep rides to Lake Saif ul Malook, camping at Lulusar Lake, and Babusar Pass. Complete guide with safety and luggage tips.

Naran Kaghan — Pakistan's Most Accessible Alpine Experience

Naran Kaghan Valley in KPK's Mansehra district is one of Pakistan's most beloved tourist destinations — accessible enough for family trips yet spectacular enough to leave you breathless. The valley follows the Kunhar River from Mansehra all the way to Babusar Pass (4,173m) at the edge of Gilgit-Baltistan. Lake Saif ul Malook, the legendary alpine lake surrounded by three peaks, draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually and is perhaps Pakistan's most photographed location.

Getting There from Islamabad

Route: Islamabad → Hazara Motorway (E35) → Abbottabad → Mansehra → Balakot → Kaghan → Naran (distance: ~250 km, travel time: 4–7 hours depending on traffic and road conditions). The road from Balakot onwards narrows significantly and passes through several areas prone to landslides during monsoon season (July–August). Check road conditions before departing during monsoon months.

Lake Saif ul Malook — Jeep Ride Safety

Lake Saif ul Malook sits at 3,224 meters above sea level. A regular car cannot make the last 9 kilometers — you must hire a local jeep from Naran (approximately PKR 1,000–2,000 per person). The jeep road is unpaved, steep, and narrow. Luggage considerations:

  • Bring a small daypack to the lake — leave your main luggage at the Naran hotel
  • Items on jeep rooftops are not secured — hold your bag or keep it inside the vehicle
  • The jeep ride is bumpy — phones in shirt pockets fall on the floor regularly. Use zipped pockets.
  • At the lake itself: stunning for photography but bags left at the lakeshore are unattended when you walk to viewpoints
  • QR tag everything — helpful finders at this very popular destination can scan and contact you

Babusar Pass and Beyond

Babusar Pass opens to traffic approximately May–October, weather permitting. This is one of Pakistan's most dramatic mountain passes — 4,173 meters above sea level. At the top, wind is extreme: hats, scarves, and light items blow away. Secure everything before exiting the vehicle. Camera gear is particularly at risk in the wind — hold lenses, lens caps, and filters carefully.

Camping in Kaghan Valley

Camping at Lulusar Lake, Batakundi, and Shogran is popular. Camping adds specific security challenges: luggage in tents is unguarded overnight, items set down around campfire sites get left behind in the morning rush, and small electronics left in tent pockets may disappear. Keep all valuables in a single zipped bag and sleep with it inside your tent, not outside.
