Turkish Airlines Lost Luggage — Guide for Pakistani Travelers via Istanbul
Lost your bag on Turkish Airlines via Istanbul? Guide for Pakistani travelers on filing claims, Istanbul airport contacts, online tracking, and getting compensation.
Istanbul as a Major Hub for Pakistani Travelers to Europe
Turkish Airlines (TK) operates one of the world's largest route networks, and Istanbul International Airport (IST — the new airport, not the old Atatürk) serves as a major connecting hub for Pakistani travelers going to Europe, the UK, and the Americas. Pakistani students heading to universities in the UK frequently use TK for its competitive pricing and direct connections.
Istanbul International Airport (IST) is the world's largest airport by terminal size — it's enormous. Getting from one gate to another can take 20–30 minutes, which means tight connections and bags frequently don't make it.

Filing a Claim at Istanbul Airport (IST)
- 1Go to the Turkish Airlines Baggage Services desk — at IST, these are located in the arrivals area, Level 1, near baggage belt Zone A and Zone B.
- 2File a PIR before leaving the airport. Istanbul is enormous — allow extra time to find the desk.
- 3Turkish Airlines PIR reference numbers begin with 'ISTK'.
- 4If you have a long layover and your bag was supposed to go to your final destination, ask specifically: 'Has my bag been scanned at Istanbul?'
- 5Track via turkishairlines.com/baggage-tracing using your PIR reference + last name.
Filing from Pakistan After Arrival
- You have 7 days to report damaged bags and 21 days to report lost bags after your flight
- Call your nearest TK Pakistan office (above) with your PIR reference
- Email: baggage@thy.com with flight details and PIR reference
- TK generally responds to email claims within 3–5 business days
The Istanbul Transit Problem
Istanbul's new airport (IST) is significantly more efficient than the old Atatürk Airport, but transit baggage issues still occur for specific reasons:
- Minimum connection time: Turkish Airlines requires at least 75 minutes for international-to-international connections. If your connection is booked shorter (by a third party), your bag has high risk.
- Security re-screening: some transit passengers at IST need to re-clear security, adding delay
- Peak times: summer months and school terms, IST handles an enormous Pakistani student transit volume
- Overbooked flights: when a flight is overweight, bags (not passengers) may be held and put on the next flight
